Aish Under Fire

There is an opinion in segments of the Frum “kiruv” world that the ends justifies the means. Specifically, that you are allowed to lie to someone in order to facilitate their becoming religious.

But repeated lies have costs. And the internet is a great place to bring on the bill.

Ba’al Tshuvahs Anonymous hits harder than he ever has in this post on Aish HaTorah’s lies.

haha. they are shameless sometimes. i also think they see truth a bit differently. like, they judge what is true by different criteria. i have a bt friend who used to have gay friends and now doesn’t believe in homosexuality. i didn’t know it was an article of faith before. but now i know that for me things in the world like people and general stuff is obviously true and beliefs are judged based on how they fit in with that. for her, the torah and tanya are true and things that she percieves with her senses may or may not actually be true based on whether they fit in with the Truth (big capital T) of the torah and tanya…

I understand the difference in values, but taking an “ends justifies the means” approach always allows for brutality on some level, and when identified, will rarely be publicly ideologically defended.

Right- lying to get people to be frum is akin to immersing in a mikvah while holding a rat, to use the rabbinic metaphor.
