In Defense of Schumer
Schumer is moving to protect Wall Street. The NY Times reports,
Mr. Schumer has been busy with hedge fund and private equity managers, an important part of his constituency in New York. He has been reassuring them that he will resist an effort led by members of his own party to single out the industry with a plan that would more than double the taxes on the enormous profits reaped by its executives.
Mr. Schumer has considerable say on the issue. In addition to being the third-ranking Democrat in the Senate leadership, he is the only Democrat serving on both of the major committees, Banking and Finance, that have jurisdiction in the matter.
He has long been a pro-business Democrat and a fund-raising machine for the party, as well as a vociferous supporter of Wall Street issues in Washington, much the way Michigan lawmakers defend the auto industry and Iowa politicians work on behalf of corn farmers.
Let us be clear. Those singling out Wall Street — and Wall Street alone — are threatening New York’s supremacy as the international center of capitalism. The benefits of having such a center are desired by other world class cities. We in New York should have no interest in handing it to them. The ripples of wealth may not be felt as we prefer they be nationally, but the ripples of Wall Street are absolutely felt by local residents in any way connected to this industry. Shoe shine boys, taxis, lawyers, etc.
But in his conversations with Wall Street executives about the tax proposals, Mr. Schumer said, he has told them that he would oppose a tax increase as long as it did not also apply to other industries, like energy and real estate
And as Schumer himself explained, a tax that is ” consistent and it’s right, and it doesn’t single out New York,â€? he said.
This guy is so solid. Really one of the best senators. An embarrassing speaker, but a shrewed and nuanced legislator. Some of his moves are the kind I marvel over with Republican friends. They just nod uneasily, and say things like, “He’s a smart guy…no one’s doubting that.”

You have Republican friends?
I do! I even linked to one in the post, just to harass him while promoting a Democrat.
There is a minority Republican line in my family that goes back to the 1860’s. Some of them (unfortunately, not us) are as rich as Korach. Anyway, my parents made it clear that you have to love family and friends who are Republican, even though they are misguided.
Any time you want to promote even as sleazy a Democrat as Schumer who’s acting like a Republican, DK, you go right ahead.
DK, I don’t agree with you about Schumer. He’s shrewd, not smart. There’s a difference. You can marvel over his moves, but maybe it would be better to ask whether he’s doing what’s good for the country.
I can’t figure out why there’s such an emotional reaction to Republicans. Well maybe I can–NY Times, Hollywood, network news, colleges etc. But it doesn’t make sense. I thought once we went through all this with HillaryCare, people were going to see the light.
Too many Dems in leadership positions are Stalinists who are in politics for the wrong reasons, and want the US to turn into another France. When you look at facts though the Republicans usually have a lot going for them
So what I’m saying is don’t just love your Republican relatives. Talk to them. Embrace them. Link to them. They are a tree of life to those who will adhere to them.
“You can marvel over his moves, but maybe it would be better to ask whether he’s doing what’s good for the country.”
What specifically? His attack against giving the Arab Emirates company the security contract? Giving Bernie Sanders from VT — a guy serious about fighting corporate welfare and the environment — the nod even though he is a social-democrat? What?
“I can’t figure out why there’s such an emotional reaction to Republicans. ”
It depends on the Republican. I have voted for Republicans, and might vote for Rudy.
“Too many Dems in leadership positions are Stalinists.”
Now you are being silly.
“and want the US to turn into another France. ”
I like aspects of France. They like aspects of the U.S. We should learn from each other a little. No harm there.
“Talk to them. Embrace them. Link to them.”
I do. Ask them. And I even ally with them against the far-Left. We have some overlap.
DK, Schumer simply follows the Dem party line. The most recent example is his comments about the Supreme Court. Schumer oversimplified the issue with the UAE. Bernie Sanders is a socialist who shouldn’t be trusted with anything.
As for the Stalinists look at Hillary and Obama for starters. Didn’t Hillary recently say that she wanted to take the oil companies’ money. Hillary also has a history of support for the far left. There’s also filegate. Obama is somewhere left of Mao.
As far as liking France, well, okay Maurice Chevalier was great. But the country as a whole, at least until the last election, was inefficient and encumbered by overregulation. If you really want to learn about France ask the Germans. They send divisions into Paris whenever they get in the mood.
