Likelihood of Success Defends Socialism and Socialists
October 30, 2008 Economics, Politics
I was shocked to read this, but not as shocked as Coleman’s Republican buddies.
So: What industry did Barack Obama propose to nationalize in his remarks, or in any remarks?
None. He proposed none, and in all probability he never will.
Harry Truman — now there was a socialist. He tried to nationalize the entire steel industry. But what would conservatives give today for a world full of Democrats like Truman?
People, you don’t have to be a socialist to be “dangerous” as a matter of economics, budget, tax policy, or, for that matter, liberty. But if you want healthy economies, balanced budgets, fair taxes — and liberty — you have to know your political economy, and you have to know who is and who isn’t a Red, if only to maintain your own credibility as loyal opposition.
Conservatives and libertarians playing the “Red scare” card are losing that, fast. We like to sling the terminology of political theory, constitutional law and economics but by all indications many of us have no idea what we’re talking about. And that is not only no formula electoral victory, it is a suicide pact for the oppositing, rebuilding and renaissance.
Let’s grow up. If we can’t win on the merits, what’s the point? Haven’t we learned enough from the experience of a nearly principles-free Republican political class? Don’t we want something better?
Pretty crazy. Or is it? The insanity and excess of the Neocons over the war has now been exposed in their economic systems. And Roosevelt is looking damned good, despite years of revisionist slander.
I think those of us who are inherently New Dealer loyalists are in for a market adjustment. Our stock is set to increase. But as Coleman noted, Obama is no socialist, and may be a Great Society devotee to some degree. And the Great Societyniks have been our most significant rivals on the Left for decades…focusing on racial and social issues at the expense of a square, well, deal. For so long, they have had the upper hand…
Who will lead our team? Who will promote our social-democratic cause?
Bernie…you gotta rise to the occasion, boychick. It’s all on you. This is your time to shine. Get some rest after the election. You got a lot of work to do. And the diversity fanatics will be out in full force…hell bent on destruction, division, and distraction.

Roosevelt looking good? Revisionist slander? How so?
I don’t pretend to be an expert on economics, but I’m glad that there are books coming out now casting a new perspective on the hagiography of Roosevelt that passes for history. A pretty good argument could be made that Roosevelt was one of our worst presidents.
As for Obama, whether he’s actually called for nationalization of industry as a campaign issue isn’t the point. Look at how he’s voted , the role he sees government playing, and who his associates are . As the Good Books says, “By their deeds ye’ shall know them.”

Some policies were quite flawed. Others are universally acclaimed, such as FDIC. TVA, which promoted electric power access in the south was an important measure long-term, even if not one that immediately produced results. But the Neocon’s general perspective of Roosevelt’s policies is not holding up. Read “FDR: The First Hundred Days”for an overview of some of these critical programs, which contains discussion of Neocon criticism of Roosevelt.

Oh, really? Let’s hear it.
