Mizrahi fundamentalists are so much more normal than Ashkenazi ones
November 23, 2008 Education, Haredim, Israel
One of the claims of Mizrahi-identified advocates touted by the likes of ck and Halfsours is that extremism is an Ashkenazi phenomenon. I couldn’t agree with them more, and that is why I sure hope Shas—the ultra-Orthodox Mizrahi political party in Israel – takes the reigns of Israel’s educational system. Because teaching may be their responsibility, but excellence is their goal.
Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, a truly great leader of Mizrahim (not sure if he has an ancestor who rode a magical mat, but I’m sure there is a mayseh to be had somewhere in his lineage), expressed his progressive vision for academic improvement in Israel’s educational system.
Spiritual leader of the Ultra-Orthodox Shas Party, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef called secular teachers in Israel “asses” on Saturday during his weekly sermon.
Yosef has previously voiced his desire that the Education Ministry be handed over to Shas’ authority.
In his sermon, the rabbi said that the teachers in the secular education system know nothing, “neither Shabath, nor holiday”, and teach only “nonsense”, and added that people whose parents placed them in the secular education system are unfortunate.
“What do they teach? They teach history and all sorts of nonsense about world nations, that’s all,” he said
What a haredi redneck! This guy should take off his turban and join NASCAR.

Shhhh, you linked “ck” to Jewschool…
Chabadnik nephew told me much the same thing a couple months ago, as in “You think we’re fundamentalists?” Even used Ovadia Yosef as an example.
All politics is local, everything is parochial. Every group has their sacred cows and their pet peeves. Just try wearing hip tinted glasses like Yosef does to a Breslov shul and see if there aren’t negative comments sooner or later. Never mind that really nice blue turban. But does Yosef cotton to them going to Uman? Heck no.
