Uganda is one of those countries targeted for promoting increased circumcision. And it’s working. For the girls also.

Uganda’s The New Vision reports,

Female genital mutilation is on the increase in Karamoja, a report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has said.

According to the report, thousands of girls aged 10 to 15 are being circumcised and then forcefully married off.

“The culture is spreading like wild fire and if not controlled, it will lead to high deaths as a result of excessive bleeding and HIV/AIDS,” said Patrick Osekeny, the UNFPA coordinator for Moroto district.

Uganda outlawed female genital mutilation (FGM) in 1989, but there is no law to charge those who practice it.

Americans, Jews, and others from male-only circumcising cultures, continue to promote male circ as a panacea for numerous problems, as well as a procedure completely unlike any aspect of FGM, no matter how (relatively) mild. Of course, Europeans in circ-free societies aren’t buying it. And neither are Africans.

I predict that the more male circumcision is promoted in Africa, the more FGM will increase even without promotion.

American and U.N. attempts to de-link the two will fall on deaf ears, because it doesn’t really make a lot of sense. You have to pretend that male circumcision accomplishes nothing except reducing heterosexually transmitted HIV infection rates a bit and offers some completely imaginary benefits at no physiological or sexual cost. And most people understand that it does much more than that.

I personally don’t think teaching Africa to think like a liberal Jew is going to be all that easy. Even I have trouble doing it. You really have to bend your mind in all sorts of uncomfortable contortions and keep it there.
