Maybe that’s what it takes…

Sometimes a literal “eye for an eye” punishment is the only thing a fundamentalist can comprehend. Maybe this is what it takes. And perhaps this is why the Torah writes, “Eye under an eye.” Some people just can’t go that deep. They respond only to a most basic understanding of retribution.

Iran Press News reports,

A man who blinded a woman in an acid attack after she spurned his marriage proposals has been sentenced to the same punishment, in a literal application of Iran’s sharia eye-for-an-eye laws.

In a highly unusual judgment, Tehran province criminal court ordered Majid Movahedi, 27, to be blinded in both eyes from drops of acid in response to a plea from his victim, Ameneh Bahrami.

Ok, granted they are fucking barbarians in that country. But I don’t really feel bad for the guy.

They should just kill him, and his family should be made responsible for financially supporting this woman. Blinding him with acid is pretty disgusting.

In this culture (which I know something of, though I’m American.) It’s likely that if they blind him, his family will force a close female relative (a younger unmarried sister or cousin most likely) to dedicate the rest of her life as his full time caregiver. She will never be allowed to marry or pursue a career or education, and she will have no choice in this. In this respect, I would rather he die than destroy another innocent woman’s life.

He should be imprisoned for a time, and fined. Simple as that. Justice is the point, not revenge.

What the Iranians are up to is more of their usual proving to the world that they are tougher and more fire and brimstone than the next guy, at the expense of their souls. What a horrible thing to do, and without any sort of remorse for inflicting such maiming.

Where is this headed? The sort of barbarism seen in Hostel, inflicted by the state. Of course it would be nothing totally new, but it is totally nothing the human race should be comfortable with.

I would agree with you (maybe) if he committed his crime in America, but he committed it in Iran.

I continue to be surprised that such extremism exists in Iran, which was a gem of a culture for millennium, until the Arabs started inter-breeding with them. Islamic societies do not understand our quaint system of democracy and justice. Iranians wanted Sharia law, and fought for it in the 70’s. It’s sick, and I hate to say it, but violence is what that society respond to.

I’m not sure I’d be all for burning out the guy’s eyes, but certainly some violent (hanging?), and very public solution must meet this guy to set an example to other shitheads who would otherwise do the same.

I think we all agree. Public execution is the way to go.
