Sarah posted that the practice of addressing a misbehaving child by the over-emphasized addressing by its full given name followed by a silent stare is disturbing.

Especially so for the children of these couples

Watch Jay Leno's funny ads segments and you'll see people getting married with colliding names. Burger and Fries for one notable instance. Hyphenating them for life would be worse.

For instance Courtney Cox marrying Bob Uecker. Man what a nightmare name that would be.

Okay. here's what we'll do - we'll adopt the naming scheme they use in Iceland. A child takes the dad's name and adds "son" or "dottir" to it - so you have "Olafson" or "Sigurdsdottir". Children have last names that are different from those of their parents, but there's a lot of repetition, as they have a limited number of given names. In any case, it doesn't seem to be a problem for them.

However, as we are social liberals, we do want to be egalitarian, and we want to include the mother's name - so the kids will be "AbbyandAndrewson" and "AbbyandAndrewsdaughter".

Or they could just do what the Israelis have done and pick a new family name, and there's an end to it.

Problem solved. Next.

(<i>This</i> is what keeps you up at night?)
