Modern Orthodox Jews Try to Reason With Harediban

July 14, 2009   Haredim, Israel

The JTA reports,

The 15-year-old girl remembers a roar of male voices, a blur of bearded faces and being kicked from behind as she was pelted with raw eggs.

She was with two other girlfriends who, like her, are Modern Orthodox, and they had been walking on a Friday night through a fervently Orthodox neighborhood of Beit Shemesh known for being hostile to outsiders — including fellow observant Jews like themselves.

But things had been quiet for months and the girls shrugged off any concerns. Then a mob approached.
[...]
New York-born Rachel Lisbon, who immigrated to Israel two years ago with her young family, lives in a neighborhood that borders on Ramat Beit Shemesh Bet. Soon after moving into her newly built apartment, she received a threatening note in the mailbox from neighbors across the street who said they could see the family’s television from their apartment across the road.

The note said that TV watching was immodest and, “Should anything happen to your family, we will not be responsible.”

That must have made for some serious sweet-ass viewing…watching the neighbors television through the window from across the street.

As always, I feel obligated to note that not all haredim send death threats to their neighbors for watching television in their own homes, so it is important not to generalize.

It’s unfortunate that it’s sometimes necessary to use force to enforce community standards, but we’re not in utopia yet. The threat of applied violence is all that really backs up any law system, including ours in the US of A. Of course, over here they wear blue uniforms instead of black hats and jackets, but why focus on petty irrelevancies?

Since when do you feel compelled not to generalize?

Over there the policemen where blue too. BTW, vigilantes SAVE people. They don’t gang up on defenseless teenagers.

Vigilantes only save people when they wear a black leather suit with a bat symbol on the best. Otherwise they go looking for likely targets, hit first and ask later. That’s why they’re vigilantes.

What I don’t understand is why the anti-Harediban don’t form their own gang, bait these thugs into a trap and give them some of their own right back.

Of course, it will never happen, but I think it should be made clear to the Israeli government that all American aid, public and private, will cease unless they take the harshest and most punitive measures against these thugs. A clear message needs to be sent that this behavior won’t be tolerated.

I don’t understand why the Israeli government is so frightened of these people. I keep asking, but I can’t seem to get a straight answer.

Duh. They’re not thugs. It takes religion…

mohammed, it’s too early in the morning for me to pretend that gang-bangs and anonymous death threats for watching TV are the same as a police force that answers to the public was a serious comparison.

More importantly, it’s apparently too early for you. Why not get a little more sleep?

I know, right? That was a really half-assed effort, Mo. Come back to us with something that makes us believe that you believe.

“I don’t understand why the Israeli government is so frightened of these people. I keep asking, but I can’t seem to get a straight answer.”

It’s very simple: voting block.

But there aren’t that many of them, and many are on public support.

It’s a shame literacy tests were outlawed.

“But there aren’t that many of them,”

They vote in a block, and thusly must be indulged by politicians — as evidenced by the fact that they are on public support.

and many are on public support.

“Over there the policemen wear blue too.”
Their cops are just common street thugs. I know more than I want to about zionist police brutality, from personal experience.
All the vigilantes I heard about were either hanging horse thieves or shooting the bad guys. Just some food for thought. How do you think Russian partisans tried to enforce Russian law under German occupation? Do you think they had a right to do so?

14 Jeff Eyges { 07.14.09 at 3:29 pm }

I see. The Hareidim living under Israeli law is comparable to Russians living under the German occupation. Because, of course, Zionists = Nazis.

Are you kids really going to let him get away with this? Again?

15 DK { 07.14.09 at 4:22 pm }

mohammed, help us out. How is a family watching a TV in their house a threat to you?

16 Reb Leibish { 07.15.09 at 9:39 am }

Mohammed, you state that you know more than you want to about zionist police brutality, from personal experience. I think you are duty bound to share your experience with us for our entertai.. er.. education no matter how painful that may be. Please give as much detail as possible of the grievances which led to the encounter, the brutal methods used and the deaths and injuries suffered.
